Born 1966 Gosford.
Lives and works on the Central Coast and Lightning Ridge NSW, Australia.
Jillian's work is informed by the relationship between the body and architecture. She completed her PhD in 2009, that explored how patients respond to hospital environments that underpinned her exhibition "Pain, Anxiety and Boredom" in the dungeons of the Sydney College of the Arts, University of Sydney. In 2011, Gates solo exhibition "Corporate Cells" was held at the Lock Up Cultural Centre in Newcastle. She established Sunsiz Media's Lightning Ridge Artist Residency in 2014.
Jillian's personal experience is heavily intertwined with the philosophy of Michel Foucault that questions power structures in relation to the body. She influenced by Bruce Nauman and Bill Viola as she navigates her practice in installation art and digital media.
